AnythingElse: My 13 year old daughter was referred for a fixed brace in September 2012. We went with a positive attitude, and after the initial appointment for a mould taken etc we were happy to proceed with the treatment. The day my daughter had the brace fitted I were concerned how quickly they fitted it, no more than 20 minutes to fit top and bottom, which I have since learnt that it should take up to an hour. On the car journey home the retainer put on her back teeth to prevent her biting down and breaking the brace simply fell out. The following day the inside of her cheek were cut to ribbons due to loose pieces of wire. I called the surgery and they offered to see her the following day, which I thought were good......until we got there. We have a 1 hour round trip and all they did were snip the wire with wire cutters, it took seconds, I could have done that myself, or took her to see our regular dentist which they said we couldn't do. Within the next few months between appointments, several studs fell off with very little encouragement, our regular dentist agreed that my daughter were not to blame for them falling off and actually removed parts of the brace himself to prevent more damage being done to her mouth/teeth. We went back for the adjustment appointment and were flatly told my daughter wasn't going to be treated that day as she had abused her brace. The management spoke to my daughter like a liar, telling her she had not looked after the brace. When I jumped to her defence they turned their patronising, rude, tone to me. We were treated appallingly, in the end they said if there were no further damage to the brace at our next appointment they would adjust it, otherwise they were going to remove it! Our next appointment was for almost 4 months later! Needless to say the studs continued to fall out, she now has 12 of the 24 left and no wire, completely pointless. I would be interested to see reviews from private, full paying patients, I absolutely believe we were treated poorly due to being referred from the nhs, which all children are entitled to.
