Cycling Score

The Cycling Score shows the percentage of people in this location who cycle at least once a week, for any amount of time. The score is based on annual survey data from the Department for Transport. It is a measure of how ‘healthy’ people are in your area, but it also indicates how easy it is to get out and cycle – whether there are enough safe cycle paths, how much traffic there is and how easy it is to reach the wider city by cycle from the location.

9.9 / 10

Walking Score

The Walking Score shows the percentage of people in this location who walk at least three times a week for more than 10 minutes. It is a measure of how ‘healthy’ people are in your area, but it also indicates how easy it is to get out and walk as a means of exercising. For example, are there parks or green spaces around, is it safe to walk around (particularly in evenings) and is the level of traffic prohibitive.

Greenspace Score

The Green Space score shows weekly visits to green space in your city or borough. This score comes from data from Natural England, who measure how people use the natural environment around them. A good score in our study is given to areas where people visit or use the natural environment around them frequently. There are many reasons that inform the score for your area; not only how many parks and green spaces there are but also how accessible and well maintained they are.

4.6 / 10

Hospitals Score

The Hospital Score is based on the ‘Friends and Family’ test (FFT) for your local hospital, which comes from the Department of Health. The test is a measure of how patients feel about their local hospital, based on whether or not they would recommend it to friends and family. If an area has more than one hospital, our score takes an average of the different FFT tests. The score an area receives could have many reasons, but it is likely that waiting times, how quickly patients are treated after seeing a doctor and the quality of care received are important factors.

5.5 / 10

GP Score

The GP Score is based on data from NHS England, measuring the percentage of patients who can see a GP fairly quickly. It includes factors such as how many GPs are available in the area and how easy it is to book an appointment. The Friends and Family Test, currently available in the Hospital Score, will be released and added to this section later in 2015.
